Drinking Water Update #3 – Boil Water Advisory Lifted

Boil Water Advisory Lifted

Great news—the water samples have come back clean and your water is safe to consume! Thank you for your patience and understanding while we worked through this issue.

Splash Pad Update:
While the water system is operating normally, the splash pad will remain closed for now. We are actively investigating the cause of the recent issue, and out of an abundance of caution, we’ve chosen to keep it closed until we can be sure it won’t happen again.

We appreciate your continued patience as we work to keep our community safe and informed.

Drinking Water Update #2

Water samples were taken this morning, and the system is currently operating normally. However, the boil water advisory remains in effect at this time.

We expect to receive more information by tomorrow around noon, and we will provide an update as soon as possible.

Thank you for your continued patience and understanding!

Village of Lawton

Drinking Water Update #1

To the water users of the Village,

We had a major control failure last night. The alarms that should have triggered to notify us of an issue failed for an undetermined reason. This is being investigated. The water system is now working normally, however, the boil water alert is still in effect until we can get the all clear from EGLE. We will continue to update the website and the Facebook page as more information becomes available.

Village Staff

Drinking Water Warning

Village of Lawton lost pressure and contamination may have occurred
BOIL YOUR WATER BEFORE USING

Due to a drop-in pressure in the Village of Lawton water supply, bacterial contamination may have occurred in the water system. Bacteria are generally not harmful and are common throughout our environment. Corrective measures are currently being undertaken to correct the situation.

What should I do?
DO NOT DRINK THE WATER WITHOUT BOILING IT FIRST. Bring all water to a boil, let it boil for one minute, and let it cool before using, or use bottled water. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and preparing food. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water. Continue using boiled or bottled water until further notice.

What happened? What is being done?
These precautionary actions are being taken due to the loss of water pressure in the water distribution system caused by a control issue on 06/27/2025. Whenever a water system loses pressure for any significant length of time, precautionary measures are recommended.

The Village of Lawton is working to get pressure restored, and water staff will be taking other remedial actions such as flushing and collecting bacteriological samples from around the system. The samples will be collected to determine that the water quality meets the state drinking water standards. We will inform you when tests show no bacteria and you no longer need to boil your water. We anticipate the boil will be in place for the weekend and we will update as more information becomes available.

This boil water notice shall remain in effect until results from the sampling verify the water is safe to drink. Customers will be advised when the boil water advisory has been lifted.

For more information, please email us at clerk@lawtonmi.org. General guidelines on ways to lessen the risk of infection by microbes are available from the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1(800) 426-4791.

Please share this information with all the other people who drink this water, especially those who may not have received this notice directly (for example, people in apartments, nursing homes, schools, and businesses). You can do this by posting this notice in a public place or distributing copies by hand or mail.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR DRINKING WATER

Reporting Requirements Not Met for the Village of Lawton

We are required to report the results of your drinking water for specific contaminants on a regular basis. Results of regular monitoring are an indicator of whether or not your drinking water meets health standards. While we collected our monthly total coliform sample on time, we did not report the results to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) by the May 10, 2024, deadline for the April 1 to April 30, 2024, compliance period.

What should I do?

There is nothing you need to do at this time. This is not an emergency. You do not need to boil water or use an alternative source of water at this time. The results of the sample were negative for bacteria. Even though public health was not impacted, as our customers you have a right to know what happened and what we did to correct the situation.

What happened? What is being done?

While we collected the sample on time, we inadvertently missed reporting the sample results to EGLE by the required deadline. We are required to monitor total coliform by collecting two samples per month. We collected the required samples on April 16, 2024, but failed to report the results until May 30, 2024. We are making efforts to ensure this does not happen again. We have already returned to compliance.

For more information, please contact: Todd Hackenberg 269-624-6407 / thackenberg@lawtonmi.org.

Please share this information with all the other people who drink this water, especially those who may not have received this notice directly (for example, people in apartments, nursing homes, schools, and businesses). You can do this by posting this notice in a public place or distributing copies by hand or mail.
